Mohamed Ali (Pescatore)

When Mohamed Ali started at the University of Mogadishu, his Italian class teacher began with the usual introductions, asking: “Where are you from, and what food do you like the most?” Mohamed Ali responded that he was from Bosaso, “the city with a beautiful beach,” and that he likes fish.

The professor then asked about the two years of post-secondary school–known as “shaqadii qaran.” Mohamed explained, “I spent half in Baraawe, a splendid beach there, and the other half in Kismayo, swimming daily at the Kismayo Liido beach.” The teacher grinned and said: “And now you’re in Mogadishu, near Liido! You’re clearly a man of the sea, a fisherman!” (Sei un uomo di mare, pescatore!). That is where he got his nickname: Pescatore.
